Ben Rush: Call to Action!

If you are a Ben Rush participant, then you know one of the requirements is to write letters to your legislators. Well, here is a great opportunity to do that! The Senate is considering ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

This is a radical attempt to take away parental rights. Make no mistake—if they succeed at ratifying this treaty, the Convention on the Rights of the Child is next. This is not a battle just for parents with disabled and special needs children. This is a battle for everyone concerned about parental rights and the freedom to homeschool.

Although a final vote has not been scheduled yet, HSLDA Chairman Michael Farris believes they will try to schedule the vote for this week. Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) wants to have the vote “real soon,” and the Senate is scheduled to recess on August 3. If the Senate wants to vote before the recess, they will be voting this week.

We absolutely must flood the U.S. Senate with phone calls and emails. Senator Durbin mentioned that they were hearing from homeschoolers (and he was annoyed at us for voicing our opinion of his side’s planned assault on parental rights), but we need to do even more.

This is probably the most important legislative battle we will fight this year, and you can help fight it and get Ben Rush credit at the same time!

If you have not yet written the letter to your legislators (or even if you have), please write to your Senators and tell them to oppose this treaty. Because the vote may be this week, please do not mail the letters, but fax or email them. You can get the contact information for your Senators at the HSLDA Legislative Toolbox! After you send your letter, email me a copy of your letter, and I will give you credit for the letter.
